Retail development support was provided to 12 museums during 2013-15 through tailored consultancy and mentoring. Museums were supported, with expert help from Selina Fellows, to review current retail operations and improve systems/procedures to increase profitability.
Phase 1 museums (2013-14) included Hartlepool Museums, Killhope Museum, DLI Museum, Seven Stories, The Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland, The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Museum and Locomotion.
4 museums from Phase 1 were further supported in Phase 2 and 4 new museums enrolled on the programme.
Phase 2 museums (2014-15) included Hartlepool Museums, Killhope Museum, DLI Museum, Seven Stories, Bailiffgate Museum, The Dorman Museum, Captain Cook Museum and Kirkleatham Museum.
Museums were assisted to implement key recommendations. The general outcomes across the participating museums included:
- Better stocked and more appealing shops
- Increased commercial confidence
- Increase in shop sales
- Improved systems for stock and sales management
- Development of business planning skills
- Improved tools for measuring performance (e.g. trading accounts)
